About Big Red Kitchen

Big Red Kitchen was developed as a living historical document comprised of my recipes and stories to bridge my past with my children's future. BRK later morphed into a virtual gathering place for friends, family, and others who share the desire for good food and the intimacy experienced when breaking bread as one.

I guess it would be nice if you knew a little bit about the girl behind BRK. My name is Robin Sue, because when it came time to name me, my parents had exhausted all options for a girl's name. Every time Ma suggested a name, my Dad would say, "no, I have a cousin named that and she has a lisp," or "no, I have a cousin named that and she is cross-eyed," or "no, I have a cousin named that and she has webbed toes." He did not have a cousin Robin. Sue is my aunt's middle name. I am half Italian, half Texan. I have a brother, Rob, the dude at Attifood with an attitude. I wonder why when they named Rob, Dad didn't say, "no, we have a daughter named that?"

I have been married to Himself, Laird of our wee clan, for 18 years and we have three very cute children. I am a BSNRN (Albright College Alum), currently not practicing, and have worked in exciting positions such as ICU, as a clinical instructor for a small college, and a nurse specialist for a pulmonary rehab unit. I am a Christian, avid reader, wannabe gardener, occasional traveller, dabbling photographer, dedicated CrossFitter, TV Commercial Talent, and Voice Over Talent. Other than being a full-time housewife, I recently retired from teaching Biology, other sciences, and Girl's PE. I loved teaching Biology because I marvel at God's creativity, diversity, attention to detail, color palette, and sense of humor. Right now I am living out my dream working fulltime with Big Red Kitchen LLC here in the Washington DC area, providing down to earth cooking classes at my Cooking Salon in the Reston Market and here in Big Red Kitchen.

My philosophy on cooking and entertaining is this:
1. When it comes to cooking, it is not so much that one has to be good cook, it's more that one knows a good recipe from bad.

2. It is better to master one thing and become known for it.

3. Nothing is ever easy, ease is an effort as well.

4. With food in one hand and drink in the other, tales are spun with reckless abandon.

5. Perfection is pride stepping on your creativity.

6. Paper plates are essential.

7. Write "welcome" in the dust rather than waiting for a clean house to open your home.

8. Laugh when your guest's child vomits on your couch because next month your child will pee on your girlfriend's sofa.

9. "Stick to what you know." Quote from my Ma.

10. When it all seems to be going wrong, just smile and nod.

Hi Robin!
Nice to meet you! While in some ways I feel like I did before, I love to have a face to go along with it. And being a visual person it is hard to feel like I know you without that face. I liked hearing more about you too. And thanks for mentioning the clean (or not so) house as mine falls into the latter category but since I love to cook, I invite people over.

Looking forward to more of your great recipes!

I like your story and I enjoy your blog, Robin Sue.

Nicole- I do like seeing pictures of people on their blogs, its like I am face to face with them! I think I lost many years of great entertaining because I thought my house was messy (it was!) but I think most appreciate the food and fun we have to share.

Veronica- Thanks! I visit you too and love what you are cooking!

Hi Robin,
Now that I've met you in person, I can testify that you are just as funny in person. You diligently "worked" the whole weekend, tasting everything possible. Every time I looked over at you, there was Robin tasting chocolate pizza, or last night's doggie bag, or other goodie. The hard work of taste- testing never stops for you, does it! What a hard worker!
Now I'd just like to know where I can find that White Castle slider recipe you talked about.
Thanks for providing amazing recipes, inspiration, and always a good laugh.
Elizabeth

Robin, I just came upon your blog because I was looking for unique baby shower desserts. I am so glad I found your blog. I will be making the Lazy Lady Petit Fours, and I know they will be a hit. I was really impressed with the Jack and Jill Baby Shower blogs, that I wanted to read more about who you are. If we lived closer, (I am in Nashville), I think we would get along well. God bless you and thank you for sharing your thoughts on your blog. I look forward to reading more. Blessing, Barbie

My husband and I are coming to Reston for a conference in a couple of weeks and were wondering if you might recommend any restaurants to eat at that aren't in the Reston Towne Center.

Any thoughts would be great - thanks so much!

Dear Robin Sue,
I am so blown away by this whole blogging world. I had no idea...I started a family blog for the same reasons as you. Leaving my children with the recipes and memories I have in this red-head makes me happy and peaceful. Once upon a time I agreed in prayer with a co-worker that I'd write my cookbook, but I think it took sixteen years and ten children to get me to the point where I am now.

I want to say thank you for being an inspiration. I'm also an RN and will someday go back--in some capacity--I like the idea of teaching young people.

I hope we can be in touch from time to time! In the meantime, I'll really enjoy reading on and trying recipes! God bless you!

Hi, Robin Sue,

I really enjoyed reading your blog! Thank you for helping us with the Catoctin Creek bottling day.

May I have permission to cross-post your story about our distillery to my company web site? I'd like to include a clip of the text, and one of the photos, with attribution and a link to your BRK blog.

Again, thanks for joining us last Saturday, and it was so nice to meet you and your husband.

Thanks again!
